Welcome to The Music Man at Oakland's Temple Hill 2023. It is exciting to present this wonderful community musical as a gift to all in the Bay Area. The Music Man performances are open to all at no cost. You can order your free tickets through the online ticket box office at TempleHill.org starting May 20. We are able to present this musical at no cost, because all our performers, production crew, directors, and producers are volunteers. In addition, the beautiful 1,600-seat Oakland Temple Hill Auditorium at 4780 Lincoln Avenue in Oakland is being provided free of charge by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for these performances.
Participation as an actor, musician, dancer, or on the production team has been made available to all from our diverse communities in the SF Bay Area. The Music Man has been called the All-American Musical. Meredith Willson wrote the script and composed all the music for this fun all-age show. It first ran on Broadway for four years featuring Robert Preston and won five Tony Awards in 1957. The show has returned to Broadway multiple times with the most recent performances starring movie and Broadway superstars, Hugh Jackman and Foster Sutton, running through 2022 and closing January 15 of this year.
The story of The Music Man features a fast-talking con man, Harold Hill, who is challenged to take on the strait-laced and colorful characters of small-town River City, Iowa. He has to face the stubborn townsfolk and especially River City’s librarian and piano teacher, Marian Paroo, who is intent on exposing him as a fake. The musical features a large cast from 6 to 60+ in age, who all get to learn how these town characters interact with someone from outside their community, while dealing with their own beliefs about others in their own town. The songs are well-known, Trouble (the first real rap song?), Lida Rose, Till There Was You, and of course, 76 Trombones. The music is amazing and will include a 20+-piece live orchestra. The dancing is fun and lively, and the story is endearing and meaningful. Indeed, the Hollywood Reporter said of the latest Broadway version, “…the show ironically feels urgently timely.” It’s a great show that will be enjoyed by all ages.

Ensemble – Numerous roles for salesmen on the train, townsfolk, families, teen groups, and boys in the marching band. Almost all need to sing and dance to some extent, but also room for some non-dancers and non-singers. Can use all ages from age 6 to age 86.
Featured Dancers – We are looking for a dozen or so very good dancers to be featured in the production song and dance numbers – at least 8 young men and 8 young women, preferably age 16 and above. Exceptional dancers ages 12 to 15 may also be considered.
Harold Hill – Male lead role. Age: 35-50. Traveling salesman. Vocal range: Tenor-Bari, B3-G4
Marian Paroo – Female lead role. 25-40-year-old librarian. Vocal range: Soprano, G3-Ab5
Charlie Cowell – Male. 30-50-year-old anvil salesman. Vocal range: No vocal solos
Mayor Shinn – Male. 45-60-year old Mayor of River City. Vocal range: No vocal solos, can be non-singer.
Mrs. Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn– Female. 50-65-year-old wife of Mayor Shinn. Vocal range: Alto, Mezzo-Soprano D4-D5
Marcellus Washburn – Male. Age: 30-45. Sidekick to Harold Hill. Vocal range: Tenor, E3-A5
Ethel Toffelmeier – Female. 30-45-year-old girlfriend of Marcellus and Pick-a-Little Lady. Vocal range: Alto or Mezzo-soprano, C4-E5
Mrs. Paroo – Female. 45-60-year-old mother of Marian and Winthrop. Vocal range: Mezzo-soprano, Bb4-E5
Winthrop Paroo – Male youth. 8-10-year-old brother of Marian. Has a distinct lisp. Vocal range: Boy Soprano, C4 – Eb5
Amaryllis – Female youth. 8-10-year-old piano student of Marian.
Ewart Dunlop – Male. 30-55-year-old school board member in the barbershop quartet. Vocal range: Tenor, D3-G4
Oliver Hix – Male. 30-55-year-old school board member in the barbershop quartet. Vocal range: Baritone, D3-F#5
Jacey Squires – Male. 30-55-year-old school board member in the barbershop quartet. Vocal range: High tenor, B4-B5
Olin Britt – Male. 30-55-year-old school board member in the barbershop quartet. Vocal range: Bass, Gb2–D4
Tommy Djilas – Male teen. 14-16-year-old trouble-making kid. Vocal range: No vocal solo. Should be a good dancer.
Zaneeta Shinn – Female teen. 14-16-year-old daughter of Mayor Shinn: Vocal range: No vocal solo. Should be a good dancer.
Gracie Shinn – Female child/teen. 10-13-year-old sister of Zaneeta and daughter of Mayor Shinn. Vocal range: No vocal solo. Soprano or alto in the ensemble.
Alma Hix- Female. Age: 30-55. Wife of Oliver Hix and Pick-a-Little Lady. Vocal range: Alto, D4-D5
Maud Dunlop – Female. Age: 30-55. Wife of Ewart Dunlop and Pick-a-Little Lady. Vocal range: Alto, D4-D5
Mrs. Squires – Female. Age: 30-55. Wife of Jacey Squires and Pick-a-Little Lady. Vocal range: Alto, D4-D5
Conductor – Male. 30-60-year-old train conductor. Vocal range: No vocal solo. Tenor or bass as part of the ensemble.
Constable Locke – Male. 30-50-year-old town constable. Vocal range: No vocal solo. Tenor or bass as part of the ensemble.
Production Team – Family members of cast members and other volunteers are needed for numerous production team roles, including stage crew, seamstresses, props, set artists, set construction, painters, ushers, concession helpers, rehearsal pianists, instrumentalists, rehearsal assistants, make-up artists, and lighting and sound technical assistants.
